The Nike Zoom Streak 5: High Mileage Performance

Look at the feet of any Nike-sponsored athlete at the starting line of a major marathon and you’ll likely see one of two shoes. The first is Nike’s Flyknit Racer, one of their innovative marvels of the past two years, a shoe that Nike has been sure to pump plenty of marketing dollars into. The other – a bit of a cult classic, a shoe that flies under the radar yet remains a contender for the podium. The Nike Zoom Streak has long been a favorite of competitive marathon runners, and for good reason.

Nike recently launched the fifth version of the Streak, and we’re excited about this update. While the Streak 4 was a little bit of a dud for us, version five shows plenty of promise upon try-on. Plus it looks sweet!

The Streak has always hit the sweet spot between weight and cushioning for runners needing a racing shoe with a decent protection underfoot, and the Streak 5 is no different. There is a good amount of foam underfoot, keeping you going up to 26.2, while a responsive feel urges you to pick it up on your way to your next PR. And at 6.7oz, it may not be the most nimble shoe, but it’s not going to feel sluggish, either.

In our minds, the upper on this version is a huge improvement over that of the Streak 4. Utilizing engineered mesh in the forefoot and Nike’s Dynamic Flywire around the midfoot, the shoe offers a seamless, almost socklike fit. Note that the shoe is on the roomy side for a racing shoe; if you want that snug, track spike-like fit you’re better off going down half a size.

If you’re looking for something for an upcoming race, or even just a speedwork or tempo run shoe – something zippy and light without totally trashing your legs every time you use them, the Nike Zoom Streak is sure to be worth a look.
