The FuelCell Impulse is New Balance’s latest addition to their lineup of shoes with nitrogen injected midsole technology known as FuelCell. The first shoe to feature the FuelCell technology was the snappy New Balance FuelCell v1 followed by the max stability New Balance 1260 v7. In each of these models, the rubberized foam known as FuelCell was used to increase responsiveness and this remains the same for the New Balance FuelCell Impulse. However, while previous FuelCell models were heavier and geared more towards daily training, the Impulse distinguishes itself as a speed-oriented lightweight trainer.
In past models, the New Balance FuelCell material has extended almost the entire length of the shoe. However, the Impulse uses a thin layer of FuelCell under the forefoot to provide a springy toe-off. The rest of the midsole is made up of Revlite for a slightly softer heel and smooth transition. To further encourage responsiveness the midsole is shaped at an angle that encourages an energetic spring as your toes push off the ground.
The outsole has blown rubber in the heel to increase durability on footstrike and in the forefoot to increase responsiveness. To reduce weight, the rest of the outsole is exposed RevLite foam.
To top it off, the Impulse received a sleek engineered mesh upper with a bootie construction. The mesh has stylistic waves of closely knit weaves followed by densely knit weaves to create breathability in certain areas and durability in other areas.
