After reviewing their lineup in 2015, New Balance decided to discontinue the 890 v5 in order to allow the Fresh Foam Zante and Vazee Pace to take its place. However, because of popular demand, New Balance is resurrecting the model with a massive redesign in the spring of 2018. Designers wanted to create the fastest shoe within the 800 line, and the initial tech looks promising. The New Balance 890 v6 should have a snappier ride than its predecessor while maintaining enough cushioning for daily use.

In creating the new 890 v6, the first decision that designers made was to change the last, which is the specific mechanical form that the shoe is built around. While the differences in lasts are generally slight, it is an important consideration when previewing the general fit of a shoe. The 890 v6 has changed from the PL-8 last used for the 890 v5 to the VL-6 last, which is the same last used for the New Balance Vazee Pace v2.

For underfoot spring that still cushions enough for daily training, the 890 v6 incorporates a full-length RevLite midsole with 27 mm of foam under the heel and a 6 mm heel-toe offset. This feel will differ from the midsole of the 890 v5, which included both RevLite as well as ABZORB foam. To add some additional pop to the forefoot, visible TPU strips are included between the midsole and outsole.

The outsole of the 890 v6 is also markedly different from the 890 v5 and includes targeted but minimal rubber placement in high-wear areas to keep weight low.

In creating the upper, designers chose to use a breathable, engineered mesh with bootie construction. By putting it all together with no-sew material application, the 890 v6 should have a snug hold without irritating stitches.

As a result of the new design, the 890 v6 will be heavier than the previous model. The men’s 890 v6 sample is 1.2 ounces heavier than the 890 v5 production model, while the women’s sample is 0.8 ounces heavier.
