Our goal is to help inspire you to keep going, train harder, dig a little deeper and cross the finish line. For this week’s FLF, Diana will be sharing her personal sources of inspiration.


Current Position: Online Customer Service Supervisor

Favorite Part of the Job: Working with our outstanding team! Coming to work everyday is something I look forward to. Also, I really enjoy my focus as the training supervisor because I get to work intensively with our new hires. I love helping them to get established and to build a foundation at Running Warehouse.

Running Background: Growing up, I wasn’t a runner because I was more into team sports like volleyball and basketball. However, I never hated the suicides and hill sprints quite the way my teammates did. I got several major injuries from these contact sports, though, and had to have 3 major surgeries by my sophomore year in college. I was essentially forced out of playing these sports competitively so I turned to running and cross training to stay fit. I’ve run consistently since 2005 and I’m definitely addicted. In college, I only ran roads but since I’ve had ACL reconstruction, I am prone to patellar tendonitis. After college, I moved to Bend, OR and discovered the bliss that is trail running. Trails are much easier on my body and just way more fun than running by cars and waiting at traffic lights. Trail running is where I bliss out. I lived in Albuquerque, NM for a while and I understand why elite runners move there to train – it’s fantastic! The Sandia’s are beautiful. Eventually, I moved back home to San Luis Obispo and now I get to enjoy our local trails every weekend, plus the occasional beach run!

What inspires you?
My dad has had a huge impact on shaping my love for fitness. I remember going to the track with him as a kid and playing on the bleachers with my brother as he ran 11 or 12 miles around a track! He had to watch us so he couldn’t just go for a long run, so instead he would log lap after lap at the local high school on the weekends. He’s always been an example of discipline and that example is a huge influence on me. Besides my dad, a lot of my motivation to run comes from inside myself. Rehabilitating my body after major surgeries has been challenging each time but I know how to dig deep while being patient. For all those runners who get injured (and that’s a lot of us!), I completely empathize with you. Give your body time, cross train, and it will heal! Running is a big passion for me but I also really enjoy yoga, weight training, cross-fit style workouts, and cross-country skiing.

What are you training for right now?
I work full time and am in classes right now, so my fitness goal is maintenance. Eventually, I want to train for and run the 25K Montana De Oro trail run that’s put on locally. I’m not a runner who’s driven by times or constantly pushing for PR’s. PR’s are great, but I think exercise should fit into your life in a way that enhances it, not restricts it. Sometimes I ditch a Friday evening with friends early because I really want a long run the next day. Sometimes I stay out “late” (10-11pm) and drink a couple glasses of wine with friends and my run the next day is a slow 3-mile slog. It’s all about what’s best for you, and what’s balanced.

What do you refuel with post workout?
After a good workout, I enjoy a cold smoothie and a warm coffee. My smoothies consist of spinach or kale, berries, banana, and almond milk. Then an egg breakfast. Nothing too special!
