This past weekend, runners throughout the country toed the line of their regional cross country championships. While most runners experienced the mental pain of racing, Justin DeLuzio of Gwynedd Mercy University experienced much more. Approximately a mile into the race, DeLuzio was struck full force by a wild deer who had made it’s way onto the course.

With the help of his teammates, Deluzio got up and finished the race but his calves will surely not be the only part of his body sore the next couple of days. DeLuzio finished his final 8K cross country race in 31:16, scoring as the 4th man on his team.
While this was surely an absurd event to happen at an NCAA cross country race, it was not the only animal to join the race this past weekend. In the D1 Men’s West Regional Race, early leader Swarnjit Boyal had the opportunity to share pacing duties with a small dog.
