January is the month of new beginnings, New Year’s resolutions and new races. We’re particularly excited about one such race just east of Seattle, Washington. The Rain Run is all about celebrating a passion for running…and precipitation!
The first annual rain run will be held on January 26, 2013, a date chosen specifically for the high chance of rain. We’ve had a fair number of drippy days so far this winter in San Luis Obispo, and the rain adds a sense of adventure to our training mileage. If you’re looking for a rain-inspired running event, ‘drop’ by the Rain Run website or read on to learn more.
The start of this race will be at 9:00 a.m. at Marymoor Park in Redmond, Washington. Race organizers welcome both runners and walkers on the out-and-back course, just make sure you can complete 13.1 miles in three and a half hours as the course closes at noon. You’re also welcome to bring your little one in a stroller – as long as you’re a competent stroller driver.
The first few finishers of the race will receive special goodies, and all participants will be ‘showered’ with swag post-race. Our favorite new swag item has to be the Rain Run umbrella, a great reminder of an epic rainy half marathon. As you admire your fancy new umbrella, enjoy some delicious food with fellow runners, including cupcakes with… sprinkles! Get it?
What To Wear
Although it will likely be wet, the temps are typically pretty mild in this part of the country around January, making for a fun and festive half marathon. Think light layers, with a waterproof shell. Stick to synthetic fabrics (cotton will weigh you down and be a chafing nightmare), and you might want to bring along a pair of waterproof shoes to help prevent blisters. Check out our tips for rain running to get geared up to cross the finish line with a ‘splash.’
