Peanut butter and jelly. Batman and Robin. Thunder and lightning. These things just go together, right? Well it’s time to add Garmin and iPhone to that list. Garmin just introduced the Garmin ANT+ Adapter for iPhone (MSRP $49.99) and the $0.99 Garmin Fit app. Now you can sync your iPhone with Garmin ANT+ accessories for live data right on your touchscreen. These accessories include:
- Garmin Heart Rate Monitor Transmitters for heart rate data
- The Garmin Foot Pod for speed/ distance data when outside network range or indoors on the treadmill
- The Garmin Bike Speed/Cadence Sensor
The Garmin Fit app uses the iPhone’s built-in GPS technology to track speed/pace, distance and elevation when in-range of your phone network. When you finish a workout, just review your run summary and the Garmin Fit app will automatically upload data to Garmin Connect online. The app also serves as a clean interface with Garmin Connect, letting you view past workout summaries and routes on your iPhone.
How’d This Magic Happen?
You might be wondering why it took so long to sync up the iPhone and Garmin products. While most smartphones utilize Bluetooth wireless technology, many electronic sports devices use a different low-power wireless technology called ANT+ to connect with accessories like heart rate monitors. Though people have been running with smartphone ‘fitness apps’ for a few years now, until recently smartphones and wireless fitness accessories were incompatible.
The Garmin ANT+ Adapter is compatible with iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS, iPod touch and iPad. The Garmin Fit app requires these devices are running iOS4 firmware or later. With such simple compatibility and an easy-to-use interface, we expect the new adapter and app to be pretty popular with gadget gurus and everyday runners alike.
