Our goal is to help inspire you to keep going, train harder, dig a little deeper and cross the finish line. For this week’s FLF, Sean will be sharing his personal sources of inspiration.
Current Position: Web Content Specialist
Favorite Part of the Job: Seems like a trend with these but I have to say the wonderful people I work with! Everybody is always in such a good mood and it really brightens my day to have so many amazing personalities surrounding me.
I also love the flexibility my schedule warrants to fit in all of my workouts running for the ASICS Aggies, and the birthday pizza party once a month doesn’t hurt either. And I get to live in San Luis Obispo! This place is so chill!
I started running my freshman year of high school after some heavy influence from my best friends to join them on the distance team. At first I did it just to get out of P.E., but after my first race I became hooked! I was driven by the competition and it was really fun to just hang out with a bunch of friends all striving for the same goal. After having success through those four years, including a trip to Nike Cross Nationals, I made the decision to continue my career at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
I had the privilege of another four successful years here, including a trip to NCAA Nationals my sophomore year with the team and setting the Big West Conference 10k meet record in my senior year track season. Now that I’ve graduated college, I found a home with the ASICS Aggies and am hoping to have success in post-collegiate competition.
What inspires you?
My friend Derek and I always remind each other, “It’s bigger than me”, referring to our running careers. When we compete for more than ourselves, in a strange way it gives us the energy to keep pushing that we couldn’t find just looking to our own strength (kind of like the Spirit Bomb in Dragonball Z). I’m super lucky to have great family and friends support me no matter the path I take, and it’s their faith in me that makes my accomplishments worth something. I really want to influence others to be the best they can be as well. The way I see it, the more I achieve, the more people I can motivate.
What are you training for right now?
Right now, I have a few races on the schedule. I’m looking to do the Capital City Classic 12K, the Pacific TherX 5K, and the Bay to Breakers ‘Pede in the next month or so. After that I’m just playing it by ear.
What do you refuel with post workout?
After a run, I crave Honey Stinger Waffles, especially the Caramel Waffle flavor. I’m not sure if it’s even considered post-run “fuel”, but I usually have one after most of my runs.
