If we’re being honest with ourselves, we have all been there. Sometimes running loses its zest and we find ourselves feeling apathetic towards an activity that we once felt such passion for— which is majorly confusing! If you find yourself in a running rut, here are 6 ways to help pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back to running again.

1. Get new gear. A fresh new running outfit or a new pair of kicks can spice up your run. It’s exciting to have new gear to try out, and sometimes that excitement alone can be enough motivation to run with vigor.

2. Try a new route. I’m a creature of habit, so I often find myself running the same loop every morning. That can get dull, so switching it up and finding a new route to run could spice up your routine.

3. Hit the trail. Running trails is notoriously stimulating and dynamic. The excitement of a trail environment may be just what the doctor ordered.

Making running a social event will not only make your runs more dynamic, but it will also keep you accountable and motivated. It is so much easier to be a flake to yourself than to someone else, and this is one situation where peer pressure can be a good thing!

5. Set a new goal. Get back to the basics and set a goal. Whether it be a race you’ve never done or a distance you haven’t reached, sometimes creating a new focus for your running can help break you out of your rut.

6. Take a break. If you’re feeling worn out and dreading your daily run as if it’s a chore, you may need to take a break. Taking a break allows you to reset and rekindle your love for running. Whether it be a few days off or maybe even longer, you gotta do what you gotta do.
