I became a fan of the Saucony Triumph ISO after a few minutes on the treadmill, but I prefer shoes with lower heel-toe offsets. So, when I heard Saucony was making the Zealot ISO, a 4mm offset shoe with the ISOFIT and PWRGRID+ technology of the Triumph, I could not wait to get my hands on it! Working at Running Warehouse, I geek out about a new product on an almost daily basis, but the Zealot had me genuinely excited. Once the Zealot arrived, I immediately got a hold of a pair and took them for a 5.5-mile uptempo run. Typically, it is not advisable to do that, but my excitement got the best of me.
I’m a picky runner when it comes to feel; I desire a shoe with excellent impact protection, soft cushioning blended with responsive energy return, a lightweight feel for uptempo runs, and a design suited for a midfoot strike. The Saucony Zealot fits all of these criteria.
I immediately noticed the soft and lightweight ISOFIT upper. Having a lower volume feel across the instep, I found the upper secured my foot to the platform and to my surprise adapted to my slightly wider foot shape.
During my runs, I felt exceedingly protected from the pavement and enjoyed the lightweight feel of the shoe as the pace increased. Additionally, during uptempo efforts, the cushioning seemed to firm up a bit and provided excellent energy return. Most of my uptempo or speedwork shoes tend to leave me feeling a bit beat up after the run, but the Zealot’s cushioning provides remarkable protection for a shoe with such a lightweight experience, and I felt minimal aches or pains after my workouts.
The Zealot was built for midfoot runners. When I switched to a heel strike, the shoe felt a bit too rigid and not nearly as smooth. However, with my natural midfoot strike, the Zealot feels smooth, flexible, and protective.
Thus, despite my Goldilocks standards, the Saucony Zealot has become a go-to shoe for my daily training and uptempo runs.
