One of the trends amongst running shoe companies that we’ve noticed recently is the increased focus on more mainstream, traditional footwear options. Though minimal and lightweight were very much in vogue over previous years, manufacturers are realizing that their core traditional trainers continue to be the driving forces within the running world, as most runners are sticking to their tried and true cushioned and supportive shoes.

At Saucony, those shoes are the Ride and the Guide. We saw a nice update to the moderate support daily trainer in the Guide 7 months ago, a new version that Saucony touted as their most wear tested shoe, ever. The update introduced increased flexibility and an upgrade to Saucony’s premium PowerGrid cushioning for increased durability without adding weight – changes that were welcomed by Guide fans.

The Guide’s neutral counterpart, the Ride, will receive a similar treatment come this summer. Again, Saucony has claimed to put more into the development and testing of this shoe than any other, a testament to their commitment to remaining true to their traditional offerings.

Amongst the changes that we’ll see in the Ride 7 include the removal of the plastic shank in the midfoot and deepened flex grooves through the forefoot, both of which should help improve the transition of the shoe, and the former of which will lessen the weight of the shoe.

On the topic of weight, keen observers will note that the weight drop in the Ride 7 is small; Saucony was sure to keep the weight drop to a minimum with the intention of maintaining a sense of durability and cushioning, something lost in other daily trainers that have dipped into the lightweight trainer range. Don’t expect this shoe to be a total hog though, at 9.4 oz for a Men’s size 9, this shoe certainly won’t be weighing you down.

The Saucony Ride 7 will be available June 2014.
