For some runners, news of Brooks’ decision to drop production of the Launch was shocking. When the brand changed their mind soon after the decision and resurrected the model, these same runners were relieved, and a bit baffled. But when it’s first update was announced shortly after it’s resurrection, runners were stunned. How does a model go from debuting as a star to being dropped to being recused by the petitions of thousands of fans? It must have been destiny…

Taking feedback from the Hansons-Brooks athletes, the design team of the Launch 2 maintained the original essence of the cult shoe while also offering some fresh and improved features. In the upper, a no-sew, dual mesh construction and stirrup overlay design wraps the heel and midfoot for a similar fit and weight. Surrounding the heel and midfoot, the closed mesh has heat-welded TPU components to provide a touch of stability while keeping weight down. The mesh over the toe-box is completely open to encourage flexibility through toe-off and exceptional breathability.

Also new to the Launch 2, was the implementation of BioMogoDNA midsole compound, which did not exist at the time of the first version. Consequently, the Launch 2 has a versatile ride that adapts to a variety of impact forces in each stride. Lastly, the outsole dimensions of the Launch 2 are identical to its heritage model, including the midfoot cross-over contact zones with carbon rubber in the heel and blown rubber underneath the forefoot to promote a springy propulsion.

Side by side, the two versions of the shoe are noticeably different, but not so drastic that they seem incongruent. The most notable difference is discovered upon initial step in, where the additional padding around the heel collar and tongue are more plush than before. Another change is found on the toe-box mesh, which seems to breathe more easily as the porous vents are larger than the previous model. The performance of the shoe still shines like its predecessor, although the ride is slightly bouncier. So, if you love the original Launch, have no fear, for the pioneer model has survived its bout with destiny and come out the other end better for it.
