With the seventh edition of the Ride model, Saucony continues its tradition of providing a highly cushioned neutral shoe with an elemental feel. While trends over previous years have been focused on minimalism, Saucony has instead catered to many runners still looking for additional cushioning. Across the brand, Saucony has committed to lowering weight, lowering offsets, and creating a platform that sits closer to the ground, yet still providing more cushioning than a bare to the bone minimal or barefoot engineered shoe. The Ride has become a staple trainer for the neutral runner looking for a soft underfoot feel.
In the Ride 7, we see a few noteworthy updates, most notably in the outsole. With the removal of the plastic shank from the midfoot, which is replaced by an additional pod of cushioned rubber on the outside and carbon rubber on the inside, a softer feel is achieved while also reducing weight.
The forefoot platform has also been made slightly broader and the outsole configuration is flatter to offer more points of contact with the ground. Overall, the Ride 7 provides about 20% more ground contact than the Ride 6, which will make the shoe more durable and protective, granting the runner a stable underfoot feel. The additional plushness provides a sense of protection and greater shock absorption on the roads, similar to the Asics Cumulus 16 and the New Balance 1080 V4 models. While the 1080 V4 is a max featured shoe, the luxurious, elemental feel of the Ride 7 gives a similar sensation without adding additional technologies to the shoe.
In the midsole, we see the return of the heel to toe Power Grid cushioning, which combines shock dissipating, grid-shaped design with Powerfoam materials to create a soft and squishy feel. The addition of vertical flex grooves helps to enhance forefoot flexibility giving the shoe a more natural feel during toe off.
