Happy New Year!
Salomon looks to kick off 2015 with a bang by introducing the S-Lab X-Series, the first road racing shoe and the pinnacle product of the CityTrail line. CityTrail is Salomon’s approach to encouraging road running within diverse urban landscapes of metropolitan areas. Whether you’re cutting corners, flying up stairs, dashing through the park, or maybe even racing the tube, Salomon CityTrail now has a solution for you.
What does the S-Lab designation really mean?
S-Lab, short for Salomon Lab, refers to Salomon’s performance category, wherein lies the brand’s most innovative technologies based off feedback from professional athletes. Kilian Jornet, one of the world’s most dominant trail runners, plays a large role in the creation of Salomon’s S-Lab footwear, apparel, and accessories, which undergo heavy testing and re-working until the final product is released. If a Salomon product is labeled S-Lab, you’ll know that it’s geared towards elite performance. Thus, the S-Lab X-Series is intended for running fast, very fast, through urban environments.
What gives the X-Series the X-Factor?
The “X” symbolizes the cross between a road shoe and a trail shoe. Inspired by its robust trail heritage, Salomon focuses on building road shoes designed to handle changes in direction, surface and elevation. While running through a city, one is likely to encounter dynamic terrains and surfaces like bricks, cobblestones, stairs, curbs, grass, dirt, concrete and asphalt. Whatever comes along, the S-Lab X-Series is designed for superior performance.
What makes this shoe the ultimate urban performer?
Unlike traditional road racing shoes, where feet may feel exposed, the S-Lab X-Series boasts a lightweight, 2-way stretch lycra fabric to enhance durability and foot-hold compared to traditional mesh. Additionally, Contagrip, Salomon’s signature outsole material, is strategically placed on the medial forefoot and lateral heel for traction when cutting tight corners or traversing uneven terrain. With this offering, Salomon blends the premium performance of its S-Lab trail line with functionality for road racing.
Who is the competition?
As a road racing shoe, the S-Lab X-Series will most directly compete against marathon racing legends, the adidas adizero adios Boost 2 and the New Balance MR1400v2. As a result of having forefoot stack heights between 13-15mm, all three shoes have a great feel for the ground, but the S-Lab X-Series has the firmest feel. At 7.7 oz, the S-Lab X-Series is over an ounce heavier than the 1400v2, but comes in a half-ounce lighter than the adios Boost 2. With these specs, the S-Lab X-Series is a contender for traditional marathon racing, but with a more durable build that will also excel at tempo runs and interval training. If you find yourself in an urban trail race, there may be no better option than the S-Lab X-Series.
