Built for the runner who is always looking for the next mountain to conquer, the New Balance Summit Unknown is designed to provide confidence-inspiring traction on numerous surfaces, and a lightweight feel for powering onwards. New Balance’s popular 1400 racing flat was the starting point for the Summit Unknown; from there, designers reshaped the shoe with trail-focused features that should give the Summit Unknown a nimble ride with optimal grip and protection.
The midsole uses RevLite foam for lightweight protection from rocks and roots, as well as a responsive toe-off that propels you forward. A Rock Stop plate under the forefoot should improve impact protection from particularly nasty rocks.
The Hydrohesion rubber outsole generates no-slip traction on a variety of trail surfaces, including wet rocks, while also improving both the protection and rebound provided by the shoe. The alternating lug design is intended to create grip for both uphill and downhill running.
Designers used synthetic mesh for the upper material, which should provide breathability and enough durability to withstand the trials of trail running. No-sew material application and a Fantom Fit cage around the midfoot are designed to deliver a snug hold that doesn’t lead to irritation, while a synthetic layer at the toe protects against stubbed toes.
