The 1080 v6 introduced the use of softer Fresh Foam midsole, along with a redesigned upper. With the arrival of the 1080 v7, New Balance has built on those improvements to deliver what could be the best 1080 yet. Before I make that call, I’m going to take a look at how it performs.
Immediately at first step in, I felt my foot slightly sink into the soft, plush Fresh Foam midsole. As for the interior, it was what I would expect from a premium shoe – a padded tongue with a soft, bootie construction that wraps the foot. Although soft, it was not as luxurious as some of the 1080’s competitors.
Nonetheless, on the run, the 1080 v7 excels with its plush, soft underfoot. The forefoot and heel grooves help to create a flexible, smooth ride that both heel and midfoot strikers will appreciate.
For my daily runs, the 1080 v7 worked well. The dense midsole and blown rubber across the entire outsole offered ample protection and traction. These features will also ease any concerns of durability. After running 60 miles in a week in the 1080, I saw no signs of outsole breakdown.
Another stand out feature is the upper midfoot fit. It hugged my foot similar to a more performance oriented shoe. A slightly wider toe box, however, allowed my toes to rest comfortably and naturally splay with each foot strike.
A minor complaint I have is the location of the overlay seam closer to the toe box. I did not have any problems with it on my runs, but it could become an annoyance and maybe even cause a hotspot for some users.
With a price tag of $149.95, I expected the shoe to have a more luxurious interior. That being said, I still found the 1080 v7 to be one of the softer, more flexible running shoes within the premium category. The v7 is the best version of the 1080 I’ve tried on, and I recommend this shoe for runners in search of a soft, daily trainer with sufficient durability.
