Intended as a road racing shoe for runners who prefer light support against overpronation, the New Balance 1500 has received positive reviews for its past three iterations. With the new edition, designers decided to create two separate models that give the runner the option of traditional laces or a new Boa System® fit solution.

Before looking at the differences, it should be noted that the underfoot feel of the New Balance 1500 v4 and v4-Boa should be identical to that of the 1500 v3. Both shoes feature the same midsole design with RevLite foam for a responsive ride and the accompanying medial post and T-Beam TPU shank for support. Similarly, the outsole is also unchanged. Updates to the 1500 models are limited almost exclusively to the design of the uppers.

For a classic lacing fit, the New Balance 1500 v4 upper incorporates traditional laces as well as a lightweight, breathable mesh and an internal FantomFit structure. These materials should provide a snug and comfortable fit that holds the foot in place. The shoe also incorporates a larger heel loop to facilitate slipping the shoe over the heel without damaging the heel counter.

With the New Balance 1500 v4-Boa, designers at New Balance and Boa collaborated to create an upper that delivers a finely tuned and easily adjusted fit. This new upper technology should increase the connection between the foot and the shoe and thereby improve the running experience. Dialing in the fit is as easy as twisting a dial, and unlike traditional laces, the Boa system upper holds the same fit throughout the run. Additionally, like the 1500 v4, the 1500 v4-Boa also incorporates a larger heel loop.

Despite the marked differences between the two upper designs, the weights of the two models are very similar. The men’s model of the 1500 v4-Boa weighs 0.3 ounces more than the 1500 v4, while the women’s weighs only 0.1 ounces more.
