For the first time, New Balance adds Fresh Foam cushioning to a legacy shoe, the 1080.
While New Balance is going to make a big deal about the change to the Fresh Foam midsole, I think the bigger story here is the fantastic new upper. The variety of meshes in the 1080 v6 Fresh Foam are all of superb quality and the overlays and padded collar round out an upper package that may be class-leading or is at least on par with the best-in-class. The shape of the toe-box is also fairly rounded and roomy providing space for toe splay.
Getting back to the Fresh Foam midsole, this shoe will benefit from the learnings of the 980, subsequent Boracay and the Zante. All of these shoes use Fresh Foam, which is a plush foam material, engineered with geometric pattern to deliver a specific ride quality. By using 3D printing and bio-mechanical data during the design process, New Balance “tunes” the shoe to deliver the desired feel. Since the 1080 V6 is a premium, neutral shoe, the expected ride is soft and smooth.
