Available August 2018 – MSRP $119.95

This August, Mizuno will be releasing the latest version of their franchise everyday running shoe, the Wave Rider 22. Despite many runners gravitating towards Mizuno because of their preference for responsive cushioning, Mizuno has been slowly making their midsoles softer and softer. While Mizuno still provides some of the firmest shoes on the market, the Wave Rider 22 was designed to provide a softer and smoother running experience than the previous model.

Midsole

The Mizuno Wave Rider 22 uses a combination of both their U4ic and U4icX midsole materials. U4icX is used in the heel under the plate for a softer impact while the slightly firmer U4ic material is used throughout the rest of the midsole for its lightweight and resilient durability.

To help absorb impact and deliver a little extra spring, the Wave Rider 22 continues to use a plastic wave plate that extends from the heel to the midfoot. This plate also reduces the foot’s tendency to move side to side and provides a firmer underfoot feel.

Outsole

To enhance durability upon impact, Mizuno uses their X10 carbon rubber in the heel of the Rider’s outsole. Throughout the rest of the outsole, Mizuno utilizes their blown rubber which offers a softer ride that is also lighter and less durable than its carbon rubber counterpart. Using blown rubber in the forefoot is common among shoe companies to reduce the weight of the shoe while offering a bouncy ride.

Upper

One of the biggest updates featured on the new Rider is the addition of a full-length engineered mesh upper. The previous model also used an engineered mesh but only in the forefoot area. Extending the engineered mesh the entire length of the shoe should provide a more adaptable fit while increasing breathability.
