The Hoka One One Clifton was our best selling shoe for 2014. Why? It’s lightweight. It’s soft. It’s the lowest priced shoe in the Hoka line. This performance-oriented running shoe has been great for runners with a midfoot to forefoot strike, who appreciate well-cushioned ride that is light enough for fast paced running and feels good on longer, easy runs. Although durability is reduced as a result of the light weight, the running experience is outstanding.
Since the first version has been so successful, the updated Clifton 2 needed to “not mess up a good thing”. Fortunately, the Clifton 2 carries over the same midsole and outsole from the original. There was talk of adding a bit of rubber outsole under the midfoot to decrease wear. Thankfully, this did not happen. Sometimes a small change like that can change the entire dynamic of the shoe.
Hoka did update the upper, however, and the change was focused on making the fit more secure. The original Clifton has a very full volume fit and version 2 has been created to be more of an average volume fit. The very thin tongue of the original Clifton has become a touch thicker as the result of some added padding. Also, the bonded overlays have been reoriented to create a snugger midfoot and heel fit. While the changes add about a half ounce to the shoe, it is still lightweight. The Clifton 2 should have a better fit for more people while retaining the same great feel underfoot.
