2018 is here, and with loads of new and innovative shoes coming to market, people are quick to forget about all the great shoes of 2017. We recently released our 2017 best-selling road lists, which took an in-depth look at our best selling colors and models of road running shoes at Running Warehouse, but road shoes are only one piece of the puzzle. So, we also took a look at our trail category. After compiling the data and excluding any clearance sales, we created a list of the trail running shoes (by color) that sold best during Winter 2017 (Q4).
On the men’s side, HOKA was the clear favorite and nearly swept the list with eight shoes in the top ten and eleven in the top twenty. The Challenger ATR 3 — the Clifton’s trail counterpart — took the top two spots and proved to be a versatile and reliable training option on a variety of trail surfaces. Other noteworthy shoes in the top ten include the Speedgoat 2, Stinson ATR 4, and Speed Instinct 2.
While the highly cushioned HOKAs stole the show, there was a wide variety of shoes styles that made an impact on overall shoe sales. The more minimal New Balance MT10 v1 ranked third, and the more protective Altra Timp came in at sixth. While Salomon didn’t have any shoe in the top ten, the brand showed strong overall numbers with the Sense Ultra and Sense Ride ranking eleventh and twelfth, respectively. The Speedcross 4 also just snuck onto the list at nineteenth, giving Salomon a total count of three shoes on the list.
On the women’s side, HOKA dominated once again with eight shoes making the top ten. HOKA swept the top five shoes with four individual colors of the Challenger going one through four, and the Speed Instinct 2 rounding out the fifth position. The only non-HOKA shoes to crack the top ten were the Altra Timp and the Saucony Peregrine 7.
Outside of the top ten, we saw other top sellers similar to the men’s list, like the New Balance WT10 v1 and the Salomon Sense Ride. The only big differences on the women’s list were the addition of several niche trail shoes, such as the Inov-8 X-Talon 200 and the La Sportiva Bushido.
Below are the full lists for the top twenty best selling* trail shoes in the fourth quarter of 2017.
