Over the past few years, Altra has been expanding its footwear lineup to include more and more options built specifically for speed. In late 2016 we saw the introduction of the Golden Spike, which offered Altra’s Zero Drop platform and ultra-wide toe box on an aggressive cross country spike. Then, in 2017, we saw the release of the Escalante and King MT, which provided both road and trail runners with highly responsive performance options, able take on anything from tempo runs to daily training. But even with several lightweight shoes on the market, Altra has yet to release a true road racing flat. This will change in early 2018 with the release of the 4.5-ounce Vanish-R. Now the lightest shoe in Altra’s lineup, the Vanish-R provides runners with a stripped down racing flat that should excel in 5k to 10k races. With very few racing flats on the market falling under 5 ounces, the Vanish-R delivers a unique design that will surely appeal to the competitive road racer.
To create a responsive ride with minimal weight, this shoe features a thin EVA midsole that works with a firm-yet-flexible Propel Plate. With the extremely low-to-the-ground design, the Propel Plate should help provide a little extra pop while also limiting a “bottoming out” effect. Additionally, the Inner Flex design should offer plenty of flexibility and bend naturally through the gait cycle.
For an ultra-lightweight design than maintains Altra’s classic fit, the Vanish-R utilizes a near seamless mesh upper. The material is paper thin and breathable while offering a sock-like wrap with plenty of midfoot lockdown. A wider toe box allows runners to splay their toes naturally and gives runners with a wider-than-average forefoot the chance to actually fit into a pair of racing flats.
On the outsole we see mostly exposed EVA, to keep weight as low as possible, with strategic rubber placements for added durability.
