For 2015, ASICS has introduced three new trail shoes to the US market: the FujiAttack 4, the FujiPro and the FujiRunnagade.
The FujiAttack 4 is a versatile trail shoe designed to tackle a variety of terrains. The FujiPro is best-suited for faster paced running over hard-packed surfaces and the FujiRunnagade is ready to take on the mud.
Fans of the short-lived ASICS Gel-Scout can rejoice as the FujiAttack 4 is a suitable replacement. Just like the Scout, the FujiAttack 4 delivers a super smooth and comfortable ride. Thanks to a rock plate and a well-padded midsole, the shoe provides plenty of under-foot protection. An armadillo-looking midfoot overlay structure delivers a very secure fit and the upper is quite padded. Traction over loose terrain is excellent and the shoe also grips well on hard surfaces. The FujiAttack 4 is an all-arounder for the runner who prefers protection over low weight. (Compares well to the Brooks Cascadia 10)
The FujiPro can be thought of as neutral DS Trainer with trail attributes. What this means is the FujiPro has a fast feel. While not even close to the lightest trail shoes in the market, the FujiPro does have a snappy feel, which may be attributed to the use of a Propulsion Trusstic, which aids in toe-off, while also providing midfoot stability. The shallow lugs provide their best traction over hard-packed surfaces. If you use the FujiRacer for race day, the FujiPro is a good training day option.
If you train in more substantial trail shoes, the FujiPro would be a good race day option. We find this shoe to fit longer than most and recommend going down a half size. (Compares well to the Montrail Bajada)
When the run involves traversing muddy terrain, the FujiRunnagade is a worthy choice. The full-bootie construction acts like a mini-gaiter and keeps out muck. Of note, despite the built-in bootie, the shoe is fairly easy to pull-on. The closed-mesh upper is water-resistant and the applied graphic pattern helps shed mud. The shoe has a thin midsole to keep foot stable and connected to the one-piece outsole, which has deep lugs to dig into soft ground. Whether you are running fell race, passing over marshy landscapes or taking on a mud run, the FujiRunnagade is up to the task. (Compares well to the Inov-8 Mudclaw 300)
