Saucony Ride 6 Sneak Peek

May 3rd, 2013

No, you are not having deja vu. Yes, we did recently post a sneak peek of the Ride 6, but now it’s Saucony’s turn to chime in and provide a more in-depth look at the development of this popular neutral trainer.

We agree with Saucony that the updates to this shoe are all about the details, because the current Ride 5 is a pretty sweet shoe already (and Runner’s World Best Buy award winner). Here’s what we’re most excited about with the update:

  • Lightest Saucony Ride to date
  • PowerGrid cushioning replacing ProGrid
  • More flexible forefoot

Read Saucony’s full blog post for more about these updates and to check out several more design schematics.

adidas adios Boost Sneak Peek

April 23rd, 2013

adidas adios Boost Men's Shoe

By now you’ve seen adidas’ new Boost midsole compound, designed to give runners a significant increase in energy return over a traditional EVA midsole while remaining soft and cushioned underfoot. Following through with the expansion of footwear options offering this new technology, adidas is introducing a racing shoe utilizing the Boost midsole, combining elements from the Energy Boost and the highly pedigreed adizero adios. It’s called the adios Boost. Coincidence? We think not.

With a soft yet responsive ride, and with cushioning that is designed to stay consistent as the miles rack up, the adios Boost sets itself up to be a strong choice for runners seeking a racing shoe for their next marathon. The adios Boost got its official launch at the Boston Marathon expo and over the weekend Emmanuel Mutai wore the shoe at the London marathon.

What to Watch For

  • Seamless Toebox: Heat transfered overlays over the toe-box limit seams for reduced friction on the foot.
  • Responsive Toe-Off: The adios Boost utilizes a full-length torsion system, delivering a snappy rebound for a propulsive toe-off.
  • High Traction Outsole: Featuring Continental rubber in key areas, this shoe will provide unrelenting grip on the road in both dry and wet conditions.
  • Midweight Specs: adidas claims weights of 8.0 oz for a Men’s size 9 and 6.6 oz for a Women’s 8, as well as a 10mm heel to toe offset.

Saucony Xodus 4.0 Sneak Peek

April 19th, 2013

Saucony Xodus 4.0 Men's Trail Running Shoe

According to Saucony, the Xodus is all about running “around, over and through the toughest of terrain.” Sounds like they should have called it the Bulldozer. But really, this is a serious, beefy trail running shoe that’s gonna get you through pretty much any hazards that stand in your way. The Saucony Xodus 3.0 was a popular choice for runners who wanted a lot of protection but didn’t want the 10-12mm heel-to-toe offsets that typically come with such rugged designs. Expect more of the same from the update, arriving later this summer.

What to Watch For

  • New Upper: A fresh upper design better integrates the Pro-Lock support band for improved connection and confidence when the terrain gets tricky.
  • Low Drop: Saucony sticks with the 4mm offset from the Xodus 3.0. In fact, the tooling is unchanged from the prior model.
  • Unchanged Weight: We expect almost identical weights for the Men’s and Women’s Xodus 4.0 compared to the current model.
  • GTX Version: Like previous models of the Xodus, version 4.0 will be available with a breathable waterproof GORE-TEX upper.

MSRP
$110.00 ($130.00 for GTX version)

Saucony Cortana 3 Sneak Peek

April 5th, 2013

The Saucony Cortana is a shoe that sits in its own class, blending a low profile, 4mm offset design with premium cushioning and posh features. For its third iteration, the Cortana undergoes a top-down redesign, featuring both a new upper and tooling, but the core concepts behind the shoe remain. Expect the Cortana 3 to offer a lightweight and cushioned ride that will keep your feet happy during high mileage training yet can easily keep up when picking up the pace.

What to Watch For

  • Forefoot Overlays: FlexFilm has been added to the forefoot, providing a secure fit while maintaining low weight and a seamless interior.
  • Increased Heel Support: A new Support Frame around the heel collar helps keep your foot locked in place.
  • Slight Weight Decrease: Both the Men’s and Women’s models are expected to lose a few ticks off the scale, with claimed weights of 9.5 oz (Men’s 9) and 8.4 oz (Women’s 8).

Saucony Ride 6 Sneak Peek

March 26th, 2013

Saucony Ride 6 Women's Shoe

The Saucony Ride has been a dependable trainer for neutral runners since its debut in 2008. With every update, we’ve seen the Ride evolve into a sleeker shoe, losing weight and dropping to a balanced 8mm offset, becoming an excellent option for runners looking to pick up the pace or for those simply seeking a great run.

The Ride 6 looks to follow this trend, with a few minor updates that should result in a smoother and more flexible running feel. Saucony lists weights of 9.9 oz for a Men’s size 9 and 8.8 oz for a Women’s 8. Those weights are very close to the current Saucony Ride 5.

What to Watch For

  • Upgraded Cushioning Tech: Like several of Saucony’s other Fall 2013 updates, the Ride 6 receives an upgrade to PowerGrid for reduced weight and improved impact protection.
  • Improved Ride: Increased forefoot flex grooves and a reduced midfoot shank makes for a smoother transition from heel to toe.
  • Added Toe Spring: A 5mm increase in toe spring makes for a more responsive toe-off and gives the shoe a sleeker silhouette.

Nike Free 4.0 v3 Sneak Peek

March 22nd, 2013

Men's Free 4.0 v3 Grey/White/Blue

As any middle child will tell you, it can be tough to be wedged between two siblings. Such is the fate of the Nike Free 4.0, soon to be released in its third version. Still, it does a great job of standing out and making its own name for itself. The Free 4.0 v3 will slot between the Free 3.0 v5 and the Free 5.0+, offering a blend of the benefits of each shoe.

Like its siblings, the Free 4.0 v3 carries over the platform of the prior model, and focuses on improvements to the upper design. We expect weights to remain almost identical to the current model.

What to Watch For

  • New Upper: Breathability is increased thanks to large mesh panels, while welded overlays continue to provide lightweight, seamless structure.
  • Carryover Platform: The Free 4.0 v3 keeps the mid/outsole of the Nike Free 4.0 v2, with its 6mm heel-to-toe offset.

Nike Free 3.0 v5 Sneak Peek

March 21st, 2013

Men's Nike Free 3.0 v5 Running Shoes

Nike’s most minimal Free option in the run speciality category, the Free 3.0 enters its fifth update with a new engineered mesh upper. Gone is the NanoPly wrap from the Free 3.0 v4 that provided structure but also felt a bit too hot for some runners.

In its place, Nike adds engineered mesh as seen on the Air Pegasus+ 29. This lightweight mesh offers built in support where you need it and plenty of open areas for enhanced breathability. We expect weights to remain almost identical to the current model.

What to Watch For

  • New Upper Mesh: Engineered mesh is designed to provide structure in areas such as the midfoot and heel, while remaining breathable in other parts of the shoe.
  • Bootie Construction: Underneath the engineered mesh is an integrated bootie for a sock-like fit.
  • Carryover Platform: The Free 3.0 v5 keeps the mid/outsole of the Free 3.0 v4, with its 4mm heel-to-toe offset.

Nike Free 5.0+ Sneak Peek

March 21st, 2013

Women's Nike Free 5.0+ Violet/Anthracite/Purple/Citrus

This April, we’ll see a fresh take on the most popular Nike Free in the run specialty market. The first big change is to the name: gone is the Nike Free Run moniker, replaced with a new name that helps clarify where the shoe sits in Nike’s numerical designation of Free models. The shoe will now be known as the Nike Free 5.0+, meaning it is at the midpoint of Nike’s 0-10 scale between running barefoot and running in a conventional trainer.

This is a name change only and does not affect the performance or design intent of the prior Free Run model. For those of you who looked closely at your Nike Free Runs in the past, you may have noticed a “5.0” stamped onto the midsole by the heel. And in fact, the new Free 5.0+ carries over the platform of the prior model. All the changes to the shoe for 2013 occur in the upper. We expect weights to remain almost identical to the current model.

What to Watch For

  • Dynamic Fit: The improved Dynamic Fit system using integrated Flywire helps to hold the foot in place.
  • Goodbye NanoPly: The previous bonded overlays are replaced with new, no-sew construction and increased mesh areas.
  • Bootie Construction: The stretch-mesh upper provides a next-to-skin fit.
  • Carryover Platform: The Free 5.0+ keeps the mid/outsole of the Free Run+ 3, with its 8mm heel-to-toe offset.

Saucony Omni 12 Sneak Peek

March 15th, 2013

Saucony Omni 12 Men's Shoe

Saucony is planning to shake things up in the maximum support running shoes category for Fall 2013. Updates to the Omni 12 will introduce a level of runability not typically seen in shoes that offer this much support. We already think the Saucony Omni 11 is a pretty polished shoe for the amount of support it provides, and we hope that this model connects with more runners who need a max support shoe.

What to Watch For

  • Upgraded Cushioning: As in several other Fall 2013 updates, Saucony has added PowerGrid tech to the Omni for increased cushioning and a smoother ride.
  • Bolder Colors: Available with some eye-catching color combos, the Omni 12 introduces some boldness to a maximum support category traditionally dominated by bland whites and grays.
  • Widths Available: The Omni 12 will be available in standard, wide and extra wide widths for men and narrow, standard, wide and extra wide widths for women to accommodate a variety of foot shapes.

Saucony Kinvara TR2 Sneak Peek

March 12th, 2013

Saucony Kinvara TR2 Men's Shoe

The original Kinvara TR gained a fair share of “traction” among minimalists and performance trail runners when released last year. Don’t expect any huge changes in the first update of this low profile and lightweight trail shoe. The lighter rock plate and upgraded cushioning of the Kinvara TR2 should offer a nicely improved running experience, while some bold new colorways scream performance on race day.

What to Watch For

  • Upgraded Cushioning Tech: ProGrid cushioning in the heel has been replaced with PowerGrid for a smoother and softer landing.
  • New Rock Plate: A new nylon-fiber mesh rock plate sheds weight without sacrificing flexibility or protection.
  • Reduced Weight: Saucony claims weights of 7.8 oz for a Men’s size 9 and 6.8 oz in a Women’s 8, about an ounce lighter in both versions.
