Cross Country Training for the 2009 Season Starts Now

August 25th, 2009

The San Luis Obispo chapter of the Asics Aggies RC starts training for the upcoming season this week with the first organized workout scheduled tomorrow.  The group will meet at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course at 6:30 AM and head out for their warmup.  I’ll follow a short time later with the girls and plan on meeting them for the first interval at 7:15.  Tomorrow’s workout is a light one, just working the bugs out and getting back into the groove.  8-12 x 200 w/ an easy 100 jog on the grass field at Cuesta College.

I thought I’d post the general outline we’ll be following this year and provide updates as the year progresses with workout and race results.  Should be fun.

Saucony VIZI PRO – You Want to Be Seen Running at Night

August 20th, 2009

Are you concerned with safety when out on a run at dawn or dusk? If the answer is yes, then Saucony has a solution for you.

Saucony introduces VIZI PRO to the high visibility gear on the market. This striking fluorescent orange definitely stands out from the traditional fluorescent yellow. There are three essential pieces in the men’s and women’s VIZI PRO line, which include the Saucony VIZI PRO Soniclite HD Jacket, Saucony VIZI PRO Optech Sportop and the Saucony VIZI PRO Soniclite HD Vest.

The Saucony VIZI PRO SonicLite HD Jacket maintains a quiet, ultra light feel while providing wind and water resistance. The SonicLite HD Jacket is one of Saucony’s most versatile outer layers.

Adding to the high visibility of VIZI PRO, Saucony has upped your safety by providing a removable flashing LED light on the roadside sleeve that is visible from 500-1000 yards away.

The VIZI PRO Optech LX Sportop is another piece in the line with the LED light. The Optech LX Sportop is an exceptional breathable mid layer piece with a half zip for regulating temperature as well as a zippered pocket on the arm.

And the final apparel piece in the Saucony VIZI PRO line is the VIZI PRO SonicLite HD Vest.  The SonicLite HD Vest is light and quiet, keeping your core warm while being protected from the elements. A great piece for when it is not cold enough for a jacket, but for when there is a brisk wind or light rain.

Not only do these apparel pieces feature VIZI PRO, but they also feature reflective mesh panels, which combine visibility and breathability all in one fabric.

For those who do not want to compromise visibility and performance, then VIZI PRO is the way to go.

adidas Spring 2010 Footwear – What’s Old is New Again

August 19th, 2009
adidas Marathon 10

adidas Marathon 10

adidas introduces several new models scheduled to arrive in early 2010.  One of the more interesting introductions is the Modern Classics line.  adidas has taken the styling cues and silhouettes of their well known trainers and racers from the 70′s, 80′s and early 90′s and added modern tooling in the form of midsoles and outsoles from their adizero line as well as modern upper materials and construction technique such that the Modern Classic retain the same cool look of the shoes from the Day and made them competitive with shoes from today.  Think the new Mini versus the old Mini Cooper and you get an idea of what’s going on here.  The adidas Marathon 10 uses the old adidas Marathon Trainer as the original model and adds modern features like the adiZero platform, adiprene for increased cushioning, a padded collar and welded overlays.  Having trained in the original Marathon Trainer back in the early 80′s and having a stress fracture and numerous achilles problem as a result of the extreme stiffness of the shoe (in addition to a number of nutrition and overtraining factors), I can tell you that these added comforts should make this a much nicer shoe to train in than the original.  Other examples in the Modern Classics line I’ve seen are the adidas Marathon MMX, based on the old Marathon 80 that Craig Virgin and Grete Waitz made famous and the adidas Equipment Cushion 2010 which is based on the adidas Equipment Cushion that was popular back in 1993.  These are some really neat shoes in some fun color combinations so even if you don’t decide to actually run in them, they are going to be great to knock around in.

Saucony ProGrid Razor

August 10th, 2009
Saucony Razor

Saucony Razor

The new Saucony ProGrid Razor arrived recently and judging by the amount of people who stopped by to pick it up off of Jonathan’s desk, the shoe definitely draws more than its share of attention for its aggressive good looks.  The ProGrid Razor is based on the same chassis as the very popular Saucony ProGrid Exodus, so it has the same midsole, Vibram outsole and tough EBO rock guard plate as the ProGrid Exodus.  Add to this proven chassis, a waterproof liner, a 3/4 softshell, zip-up bootie upper that allows you to keep debris out, and you have a very nice package for fairly extreme trail running.

After trying it on a few observations.  First, for some reason the shoe feels firmer than the Exodus.  Not sure why that is, but it’s not a bad thing.  The shoe is designed for extreme trails which tend to be soft to begin with, so a super cushy midsole is not needed.  Next, the top of the bootie could benefit from a tighter closure.  Maybe we have narrow ankles here, but it seemed to be a bit loose at the top, looser than expected.  Other than that issue, the fit and feel were very good.  Can’t wait to get these on the trails of Montana de Oro during the next heavy rains to see how they perform.  See more.
